Hidden Connections

Here is the central insight of gematria: when two words share the same numerical value, tradition teaches they share a hidden connection. Season 7 explores the most famous and astonishing of these connections — pairs of words whose shared values reveal truths that have captivated scholars for centuries.

YHVH (יהוה), the four-letter Name of God, equals 26. What other words equal 26? The word for "unity" — because the Divine Name is the ultimate unity. Chai (חי, "Life") equals 18, which is why gifts are traditionally given in multiples of 18. Elohim (אלהים, "God") equals 86 — the exact same value as HaTeva (הטבע, "Nature"), teaching that the divine is not separate from the natural world but woven into its fabric.

Perhaps most startling: Mashiach (משיח, "Messiah") and Nachash (נחש, "Serpent") both equal 358. The redeemer and the original tempter share a value — a paradox that Kabbalistic tradition explains as the transformation of the lowest into the highest.
