The four-letter Name of God (יהוה) equals 26. What other words equal 26? Why is this number central to all of gematria?
YHVH (יהוה) — the four-letter Name of God, the Tetragrammaton — is the most sacred word in the Hebrew language. Observant Jews never pronounce it; they substitute "Adonai" (Lord) or "HaShem" (The Name). Its gematria value is 26: Yod (10) + He (5) + Vav (6) + He (5).
The number 26 appears throughout Jewish thought with remarkable consistency. The word "HaKavod" (הכבוד, "The Glory") uses the same letters rearranged and connections to the same value. "God" in Hebrew can also be expressed as the simple statement: the numerical center of the alphabet. With 22 letters, the statistical midpoint of all standard values is remarkably close to 26.
But 26 is also the sum of 13 + 13 — and 13 is the value of both "Ahavah" (Love) and "Echad" (One). The Divine Name, then, is the sum of Love and Love, or One and One — a unity composed of paired loves. This is not numerological speculation but the direct arithmetic of the Hebrew language: the Name encodes the principle that divine unity is expressed through reciprocal love.
