AlBam and AvGaD — The Rotation Ciphers

AlBam splits the alphabet in half and swaps. AvGaD shifts each letter forward by one. Torah=314 in AvGaD — the digits of Pi.

AlBam (אלבם) divides the 22 letters into two halves of 11 and swaps them: Aleph exchanges with Lamed, Bet with Mem, Gimel with Nun, and so on. The name encodes the first two pairs: Aleph-Lamed, Bet-Mem. Unlike AtBash's reversal, AlBam is a simple rotation — a halfway shift through the alphabet.

AvGaD (אבגד) is even simpler: every letter shifts forward by one position. Aleph becomes Bet, Bet becomes Gimel, Tav wraps around to Aleph. It's the most basic cipher possible — yet it produces one of the most astonishing results in all of gematria.

The word Torah (תורה) in Standard gematria equals 611. Apply the AvGaD cipher: Tav becomes Aleph, Vav becomes Zayin, Resh becomes Shin, He becomes Vav. The resulting word is א-ז-ש-ו, which in Standard gematria equals 1+7+300+6 = 314. The digits of Pi. Torah, shifted by one letter, yields 3.14 — the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, the most fundamental constant in geometry. Ancient Hebrew letters encoding a mathematical constant known to modern science — this is the kind of discovery that makes gematria scholars catch their breath.
