How does a letter "equal" a number? In English, we have separate symbols for letters (A, B, C) and numbers (1, 2, 3). But in Hebrew, these two systems are one. The same symbol is both a letter and a number — a concept so fundamental that it shaped how ancient Jews thought about language, mathematics, and the divine.

The Standard method (called Mispar Hechrachi in Hebrew) works like this: the first nine letters represent 1 through 9, the next nine represent 10 through 90, and the last four represent 100 through 400. To calculate a word, you add its letters: Torah (תורה) is Tav (400) + Vav (6) + Resh (200) + He (5) = 611.

This episode walks through the Standard system step by step, then demonstrates live calculations with famous Hebrew words: YHVH (26), Chai (18), Mashiach (358), Elohim (86), and Torah (611). Each calculation reveals a number that connects to other words and concepts — the beginning of a mathematical web that spans all of Jewish literature.

The Value Table

4m

Mathematical visualization in the style of 3Blue1Brown — clean, elegant lines on dark background. Numbers and equations glow in gold (#d4af37), connection lines pulse in soft blue (#4a6fa5). Smooth animations, precise geometry, educational clarity. A beautiful animated table builds on screen. Three columns: Letter (Hebrew), Name (English), Value (Number). Rows populate one by one from top to bottom: א Aleph 1, ב Bet 2, ... through ת Tav 400. Each row slides in with a golden flash. The value column shows the three tiers clearly: ones (1-9), tens (10-90), hundreds (100-400).

Steady, educational. Rhythmic, each row a beat.

Calculate Step by Step

6m

Mathematical visualization in the style of 3Blue1Brown — clean, elegant lines on dark background. Numbers and equations glow in gold (#d4af37), connection lines pulse in soft blue (#4a6fa5). Smooth animations, precise geometry, educational clarity. An interactive calculation workspace. A Hebrew word appears at the top. Below it, the word breaks apart into individual letters. Each letter slides down to a row showing its value. A running total builds at the bottom. Three words are calculated in sequence with increasing complexity: אב (Av, Father) = 1+2 = 3. חי (Chai, Life) = 8+10 = 18. תורה (Torah) = 400+6+200+5 = 611.

Friendly, encouraging. Piano and light strings.

Surprise Connections

5m

Network graph visualization on dark background (#0a1628). Nodes glow in warm gold (#d4af37), connections pulse in soft blue (#4a6fa5). Labels in clean white Inter typeface. Smooth spring-physics animation. Two words appear on opposite sides of the screen. They calculate simultaneously. When they reach the same value, a dramatic golden connection line links them with a burst of light. Four pairs are demonstrated: אהבה (Love) = אחד (One) = 13. יין (Wine) = סוד (Secret) = 70. משיח (Mashiach) = נחש (Serpent) = 358. Each connection gets its own reveal moment.

Wonder, building revelation. Strings swell on each match.

Your Turn

3m

Clean, friendly challenge card. The reference table appears on the right side (small, as a helper). On the left, a challenge: 'Calculate the gematria of these words:' 1) שם (Shem, Name) = ? 2) אמת (Emet, Truth) = ? After a pause, the answers reveal: 340, 441. The answer 441 = 21² is highlighted with a geometric visualization showing a 21×21 grid.

Playful, then surprised. Building to the 21² reveal.
