The same symbol is both a letter and a number — a concept so fundamental that it shaped how ancient Jews thought about language, mathematics, and the divine.
The Standard method (called Mispar Hechrachi in Hebrew) works like this: the first nine letters represent 1 through 9, the next nine represent 10 through 90, and the last four represent 100 through 400. To calculate a word, you add its letters: Torah (תורה) is Tav (400) + Vav (6) + Resh (200) + He (5) = 611.
